The belief is that trauma lives inside our bodies. There is not a certain look that someone has that says they have experienced trauma and or have Posttraumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. Most times, you are just trying to blend in and not stand out. However, there are times when your body responds, and you have no idea what triggered it or what to do to control your response.
Triggers can happen when we least expect them and can be in the form of flashbacks, mood shifts, and changes, avoiding any and everything that reminds us of the original trauma, difficulty sleeping, and finding that you are isolating yourself from those closest to you leading to feeling more depressed and alone.
There are a lot of techniques that can be useful when dealing with trauma; therapy is a good option. With therapy, you can begin to process the past hurts that you have experienced or witnessed. You will not forget the experience, but therapy can help make the memories less distressful and allow you to live a life that is not burdened by the pain. You can grow through your pain and never forget the ones that gave their lives in combat.
